I’m a chartered accountant who spent the first chapter of his career on the operating side of Canadian financial services. I have held the CFO seat at three firms and worked inside a Canadian fintech after that. The kind of work where the right answer matters more than a polished slide.
How I got here.
I started at Arthur Andersen and went straight to the financial services audit practice, which I never really left. From there I moved onto a trading floor at one of the big-five investment banks, where I learned what capital markets actually feel like when something goes wrong on a Friday afternoon.
The middle of my career was operating-side CFO work. I was the public-company CFO at Purpose Investments during the years it grew past $20 billion in AUM and launched Canada’s first crypto ETFs. I was CFO at MCAN Mortgage Corporation, a public mortgage business with deposits and a balance sheet to defend. I was CFO at Dundee Bank, a Schedule I chartered bank. After that I joined a Canadian fintech in a senior operating role.
Schulich BBA and CPA. Twenty-five years that all happened in one industry, with the same regulators, customers, and rhythms running underneath the whole thing.
What I do now.
I’m at the point where I would rather work with a few CEOs and boards at once than only one. So I keep my practice small on purpose. A couple of board seats, a handful of standing advisory retainers, and the occasional project I take from start to finish. It works because the people I work with get a CFO-level person on the actual problem.
The people I work with tend to say the same thing: it feels like they quietly added a CFO and a small strategy team, without the headcount.
Outside the paid work.
I sit on the board of Windmill Microlending, the national charity that lends to skilled immigrants rebuilding careers in Canada. I took the seat because I believe the future of Canadian financial services is built on who we let in and what we help them do once they’re here.
I also keep a couple of pro bono seats open for early-stage Canadian fintech founders. The deal is simple: if you’re trying to build something real and you can’t afford the help yet, I’ll take the call.
